THE Patas (Erythrocebus patas) intrigues with its slender silhouette, white mustache, and ability to dash across the African plains. This astonishing land primate, often overlooked by the general public, is one of the fastest in its family. Through this page, discover this monkey as an object of scientific fascination, a source of artistic inspiration... and a link between nature, knowledge, and emotion.
Did you know? A life at ground level
Unlike most tree-dwelling monkeys, the Patas evolves almost exclusively on the ground. He is a runner: he can reach 55 km/h, making it the fastest known primate. It lives in small groups in dry, grassy regions of West and East Africa.
This unique behavior made him particularly interesting for naturalists, because it develops very fine strategies of escape and vigilance. In this, it is sometimes compared to a sentinel of the savannah.
